Worthy Card Collections

My first introduction to greeting cards started when I was born. My parents kept these cards from gifts they received and added them to a baby book. This is not an unusual custom but its worthy of making a statement about it. Family over the years sent cards of all sizes depicting the season or holidays while some were kept and others lost with time.

My father decided to show me his card collection when I was a preteen. His collection was kept in a scrapbook. Each attached in chronological order. All could be opened to reveal the inside contents. One card for each year of his birthday. Some in the shape of numbers and brightly colored. Some where in the shape of numbers and some were covered in fuzzy stuff. My most favorite were the pop-ups. Those are still my favorite to this day. There were also some from holidays ranging from Valentines to Christmas.

Dr Vintage Card’s have become an hot Collectable over the years. Some have become more valueable than other’s. Collector’s prefer cards that are in the truest form of color. No tear’s and unused are the most desired. The Cards I am referring here are ones with no bar codes.

As you can image this was somewhat thick and kind of cumbersome to handle. This particular collection has been lost to time and I haven’t seen the collection since my father passed away in (2010).

I keep one vintage Valentine card on the shelf just in the corner of my craft room as a reminder of the awesome collection. It would be impossible to recreate my father’s collection. So instead, I decided to make my own collection of cards that I think are just as worthy to be collected.

Rather than store the card’s in a cumbersome scrapbook. I decided to use a photo box instead. This work’s great if your collecting a certain size. I was doing great until I changed the size of the card and found that my photo box idea no longer worked. I still haven’t come up with a better solution. I’m thinking that maybe the scrapbook is the best choice after all.

You may be wondering why people should collect cards to begin with? Well, cards from family with small written notes or signatures hold a small bit of value. They can never be replace if it’s signed by your grandparent’s, a sister, a bother, a uncle, etc. The Card’s them selves could be one of a kind, especially if it’s handmade.

Handmade cards can also be a great item to start a collection of. There are many varieties and colors. Collection of handmade cards can even be collected by season, such as Thanksgiving or Christmas.

There’s another benefit in creating a Card Collection or any type of collection. Collections help us retain memorable moments to expand our brains to remember. Think of it as a exercise for the brain in small bite size moments that trigger a moment in time. This works just as if you were looking at a photograph to give you the same effect of a triggered memory.
