I have a tendency to keep things until I discover that something newer comes out. Let me illustrate an example(s) (see below).

I have an love affair with colored pencils. I have years (YEARS) collection of colored pencils. I was taught to not waste and take care of stuff. However, when children are in need of color pencils for school they can’t just use old color pencils from the former years. One that’s not cool, two no new smell, and three our schools demanded new. Any way, I saved as many as I could so that when the kids were needing to work on homework or what ever there would be plenty of colored pencils to go around. Fast forward to kids growing up and having their own kids (yes grandma here) that when they come to visit there would be plenty of those brightly colored pencils to go around. One problem…..They don’t color here. There’s too many other things to do. So the color pencil box has a new job. They have been sorted. Vintage (long enough to sharpen) in one bin. Vintage (too short to do anything with) in its own container. Don’t worry they haven’t been thrown out!. note: this will be moved to example number two. More modern color pencils are in a separate bin and I can tell you these I use the most often. That is until I discovered new color pencils that had more colors to add to the collection such as gold and silver. Lately I discovered a new set of color pencils a whole 120 of them. I want them bad, there are colors I have never even heard of. I mean who knew there is a color pencil named magenta. I didn’t! I am getting ahead of my self here. Let’s go to example number two.
Example #2
My plan is to take a canvas and paint gesso all over it. (prime it) All those color pencils (vintage and too short to do any thing with) I plan on gluing them to the canvas. I seen it done by a Lady over on You Tube. I have been watching her for years now. I don’t know if its here original idea but I have had it in the back of my creative mind for some time now. As soon as I get all this administrative stuff done and get a few bucks coming in. I could be doing part of it right now but I would rather be yacking at you. As For the new finagle color pencils that I want… they are on hold. How ever, when they do become part of my collection, I will have to decide what to do with the new vintage collection of pencils. I suppose I could make some wall art for those grandkids that don’t like to color anymore. Maybe they will be inspired to do something with their colored pencils. Hey, its worth a try. If your interested in having a new collection of colored pencils see example 3 first. (see below)
Example #3
If your wondering how to tell the difference between vintage colored pencils vs. new ones there are people who literally collect them and have web pages on the subject matter. Brand Labels get changed periodically when companies change hands. I want to also point out that there are different kinds of colored pencils. There are hard core. Hard core are great for little ones as the lead doesn’t break as easy as soft core. Hard core can also give a grainer look to a page that is colored where as soft core fills in the grain. There are also colored pencils for the professional artist(s). They usually prefer higher grade, (soft core) colored pencils. Soft core requires a little less effort to work with. They are creamy in nature. I have worked with both. I prefer to work with hard core because that’s what I have gotten used too. Soft Core also comes in different brands as well just as hard core. The 120 set is hard core. see example below of 120 hard core. https://www.dpbolvw.net/click-100593463-13706826?url=https%3A%2F%2Fshop.crayola.com%2Fs%2FCrayola%2F688020A000.html&cjsku=688020A000
If that is a bit to much then there is also this set (see below)
One set I have and used. Comes in a beautiful tin. Having the pencils come in a beautiful tin helps keep them from being mixed with hard core colored pencils. Also if your traveling it helps keep the tips from less breakage. (See link below)
This is been great and I hope to bring you more tips and ideas using these amazing tools. Just remember to keep your creative juices flowing and any time you have a question or would like for me to feature something just leave a comment below.
